Not all coal is created equal. New Zealand Coal and Carbon is proud to provide the world’s premium coking coals for speciality applications.

Our coal quality analysis shows that our coal is high-grade, ideal for metallurgy, the foundry production of steel and silicon metal. We also have coal with high sulphur content for cement and thermal applications.

But we don’t stop there. Our thinking goes far beyond extracting the coal from the ground. New Zealand Coal and Carbon also pay close attention to research and development, especially in the area of coatings and composites. For instance, we have produced a silicon nitride fibre.

Research and Future Development

Through continuous investment in innovation, we are exploring ways to further refine our products and expand into advanced carbon-based materials. From developing silicon nitride fibres to investigating next-generation composite materials, our mission is to lead the evolution of coal beyond traditional uses – turning a natural resource into a foundation for future technologies.

Semi-Soft Coking Coal

Sourced from our Echo Mine, this semi-soft coking coal stands out for its low to ultra-low ash properties and low phosphorus levels. With medium volatile matter, it provides the optimal balance between strength and reactivity, making it particularly well suited for silicon metal production. Its consistency and purity allow manufacturers to achieve superior metallurgical performance and improved furnace efficiency, ensuring a cleaner and more stable process. This product is trusted for high-end industrial applications where material integrity and chemical reliability are critical.

Hard Coking Coal

Extracted from our Rajah Mine near Greymouth, our hard coking coal is recognised for its low sulphur content and high vitrinite, essential for producing strong, high-quality coke. Its low to medium volatile matter gives it excellent fluidity and cohesive strength, making it a premium choice for steel production and other metallurgical processes. This coal type is favoured in both domestic and international markets for its consistency, clean burn, and reliable performance in blast furnace operations.
