Ideal for cement applications

New Creek Mine

Forty kilometres (25 miles) east from the township of Westport, on the South Island’s West Coast, is the New Creek operation. Mined by opencast with very low strip ratios, the New Creek coal is within the Brunner coal measures. It is a high sulphur, sub-bituminous coal, which is suitable for cement and thermal applications.

The mine was originally opened for limited domestic use. New Creek Mining Limited purchased the operation from a local operator in 2010 with export markets in mind, especially since the product was ideal for the cement industry.

New Creek coal specifications:

Low ash

Medium volatile matter

Low phosphorus
